Uber: The Takeover

First, Uber took over ride-sharing, then Uber took over Taxi’s, and now Uber poses several other threats including Uber Cargo, Uber Delivery, and the potential of autonomous vehicles (eliminating the need for public transportation).

Uber was developed in 2009, but didn’t start picking up a large amount of business until late 2013 into 2014. It is now argued that Uber is the preferred method of transportation for many- despite their surge charges and legal cases against them.

Uber tested out a service titled “Uber Cargo” in Hong Kong, which is a service of cargo vehicles that pick up requested loads of items and deliver them to a destination. This is important because people and business owners can now deliver or move their things on demand, and track their deliveries and know exactly where they are at all times and once they arrive. It’s the real-time that people at this point, expect.

Uber additionally launched a courier servicer in NYC, which puts competition up against other apps that have implemented “Uberfication”. This service is called “UberRUSH”. This is essentially the same thing as Uber Cargo, but for smaller deliveries. The service does not use vehicles, but instead bike messengers and those who are on foot, meaning that the service is not for oversized items (items under 30 pounds only). This is great for those who need to send documents to another company or even flowers to a significant other (without needing to find a flower delivery service with same-day delivery).

It’s only a matter of time before Uber starts to mimic apps similar to Instacart or Postmates and deliver groceries and food. Perhaps a partnership will form.

Uber impressively keeps up with current and upcoming trends. They have announced a partnership with Google and their autonomous cars, though it’s not certain how the self-driving cars will play into Uber. Essentially, it will make them more money, as they will no longer need to pay drivers. Additionally, they argue it will help to green major cities as well as potentially clear up traffic congestion. Though there is no telling when this will all take place, its proof that through a changing environment, Uber is here to stay.
